PCOD/PCOS Diet Program

PCOD/PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition that happens due to hormonal imbalance. Hormones are chemical messengers that control the way the body works. For example, hormones change during puberty and send out signals in the body to start periods in girls.

PCOD/PCOS is a common condition that affects every 1 in 5 women of child-bearing age. In PCOD/PCOS either of these two hormones, insulin and male-type hormones that are androgens are produced at higher levels. This results in the following symptoms. These symptoms can, however, vary in the intensity and sometimes PCOD/PCOS has only one of these symptoms.

The symptoms are:-

  1. 1) Menses being less regular (more or less often)
  2. 2) More than normal hair growth on face/ stomach/back.
  3. 3) Acne or pimples.
  4. 4) Emotional problems (anxiety or depression)
  5. 5) Easy weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  6. 6) Delay in getting pregnant etc

Lifestyle patterns such as the way we eat and exercise can make the condition better or worse. INCREASE IN WEIGHT IS ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RISK FACTORS OF THIS CONDITION – which means that it can lead to this condition. This is a vicious cycle- with PCOD/PCOS causing weight gain and weight gain causing PCOD/PCOS. Due to this reason, women suffering from PCOD/PCOS are often advised by their doctors to lose weight.

Diet and exercise are important parts of managing PCOD/PCOS. This is because young women with PCOD/PCOS often have higher levels of insulin (a hormone) in their blood, and many have trouble maintaining a healthy weight. Knowing the right foods to eat as well as the kinds of food to limit can improve the way you feel. It will also help you lose weight. Eating well, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight (or losing even a small amount of weight if you're overweight) can improve PCOD/PCOS symptoms.
